Rain, Julio delay victory

The Marlins couldn't have asked for much more from Henricus ''Rick'' Vanden Hurk, an unheralded pitching prospect from the Netherlands who stepped out of obscurity and into the big leagues Tuesday.
They obviously need to ask a lot more from their closer, Jorge Julio, who again could not nail down a save opportunity and is quickly becoming the biggest story on this young team.
The Marlins and Brewers endured three rain delays before the game was finally suspended with the score tied 2-2 in the top of the 11th at 12:03 a.m. today.
Because of a new rule, the teams will continue the game in the top of the 11th at 7:05 tonight before they play the final game of the three-game series.
Both teams would have been dry and on their way home if not for Julio, who couldn't hang on to a 2-1 lead in the ninth.
That's not news in South Florida, where fans are getting use to booing Julio, who has given up runs in all four of his appearances, and has two blown saves. He almost had a blown save Sunday against the Phillies before Lee Gardner got two outs with the bases loaded to rescue the Marlins.
Julio, who pitches behind in the count more than any Marlin, opened the ninth by walking Rickie Weeks, who stole second and scored on J.J. Hardy's one-out double to deep center.
The Marlins, who traded for Julio at the end of spring training to bolster their bullpen, would be 7-1 today if not for his ineffectiveness as a closer. He has allowed six runs and 10 hits with six walks in just 3 2/3 innings, and has pitched behind in the count to almost every batter.
GONZALEZ ENDORSES
''We've got to keep running him out there,'' Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ``He's got to pitch. We need him to get over this hurdle.
``We have to keep running him out there and get his confidence up.''
The night should have belonged to Vanden Hurk, 21, who became the first pitcher from the Netherlands to start a major-league game since Bert Blyleven, and only the sixth to play in the big leagues.
Vanden Hurk, an emergency starter who had never pitched above Single A, was called up because of Ricky Nolasco's elbow injury and, in part, because prospect Gabby Hernandez pitched Sunday and wasn't available. Vanden Hurk went 4 2/3 innings, but didn't return after a 49-minute rain delay. He gave up one run and five hits, and struck out five consecutive batters during a stretch.
''The kid did a good job,'' said Marlins general manager Larry Beinfest, who has a knack for finding and bringing unknown talent to the Marlins.
``You never know. We liked him, but you don't know. He's got a good head on him. He really did a nice job tonight.''
Said Gonzalez: ``I thought he was outstanding. He did a great job. He was composed and he threw strikes.''
Vanden Hurk's parents flew in at the last minute from the Netherlands.
''It took 14 hours and it cost a fortune,'' said his father, Wim. ``But it was worth it, every second of it. It was awesome the way he pitched.''
Vanden Hurk, whose last victory was with the Waikiki Beach Boys in the Hawaiian Winter League and had a career record of 5-12 in the minors, said: ``They helped to settle me down.
''I was nervous. Getting that first out was a big relief,'' he said.
``I didn't even know I had five strikeouts in a row. I was just going from pitch to pitch. I'll probably be a little more settled next time.''
TAKING THE LEAD
Vanden Hurk left with the score tied at 1-1, and the Marlins got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth when Alejandro De Aza reached on an error, raced to third on Alfredo Amezaga's single and scored on Dan Uggla's sacrifice fly to right.
The Marlins' lead held up through a 22-minute rain delay in the seventh inning, and would have been enough, except for another poor effort from Julio.
Vanden Hurk started his career as a catcher, and became a pitcher before he was signed by the Marlins as an undrafted free agent in November 2002.
But there he was Tuesday, giving the Marlins just what they needed -- a decent start in an emergency. He will get another chance Monday in Houston as the Marlins wait to see how long Nolasco will be out.
It was a big night for the Dutchman and the Marlins -- at least until the rain came and Julio blew another save
Rick vd Hurk / Zondag 10/6 Rays at Marlins
